Dr Daniel Howard

Dr Daniel Howard obtained degrees in Chemical Engineering and PhD in Computational Fluid Dynamics from the Civil Engineering Department of Swansea University pioneers in the Finite Element Method. He then served as the Rolls-Royce Research Fellow in Computational Fluid Dynamics at University of Oxford and as Junior Research Fellow at the Numerical Analysis Group in the Mathematical Institute and also as a Fellow of Pembroke College. He briefly worked in the Advanced Research Computing Unit of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and later joined industry where he pioneered and led the Computer Aided Engineering effort for an oil company in London, He followed this with a note R&D career at the then Defence Evaluation Research Agency of the UK Ministry of Defence which became QinetiQ PLC in 2001, where he reached the grade of Company Fellow in 2002 as recognition of his early effort at pioneering AI technology in UK Defence. He made contributions to Genetic Programming Theory and Practice from 1996 to 2012 publishing in the early Genetic Programming literature, has some papers published with Professor John R Koza contributing to modularization (Subtree Encapsulation) and other with numerous pioneers of this AI discipline. He appears as author of many early practical applications of GP in problems of Machine Vision for military customers, and deploying the earliest bespoke GP solutions in UK Motorways for the UK Highways Agency. He has delivered several addresses at international conference and invited talks at past IEEE conferences. In 2002, Daniel also pioneered a project with the foremost world expert in breast cancer screening. Professor Laszlo Tabar in Falun, central Sweden; this achieved an unsupervised learning population based taxonomy of the breast. His contributions are also in counter-terrorism applying AI to that field and in other fields such as AI in Bioinformatics. He also used GP to attempt to find solutions to challenging differential equations. Throughout his career Daniel received the annual accolade from the Chief Scientist of the Ministry of Defence as well as other academic awards: e.g., The Honorary International Chair Professor in Engineering at the National Taipei University of Technology, ROC in 2012. Daniel has been developing commercial AI software in his company and is releasing an Explainable AI technology commercially in 2018.
